Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu has adopted a baby girl who was abandoned shortly after birth in Nzega District, Tabora region.
The infant, who has now been named Grace Samia Suluhu Hassan, was handed over to the President after authorities failed to trace her biological mother despite several attempts by local administrators and social welfare officers.
According to officials the newborn was abandoned soon after she was born on January 17. Local authorities, working with community leaders and child protection officers, launched efforts to identify and locate the mother or any relatives who could take responsibility for the child. However, the search yielded no results.
The matter was later brought to the attention of Samia during her visit to the area. Moved by the child’s situation, the President decided to adopt the baby and take responsibility for her upbringing.
The baby was formally handed over to the head of state by the Nzega district commissioner in a brief ceremony attended by regional officials and community representatives.
Samia emphasised the importance of protecting children and ensuring they grow up in safe and supportive environments. She said every child deserves love, care and an opportunity to thrive regardless of the circumstances surrounding their birth.
The President said the society has a collective responsibility to safeguard children, particularly those who are abandoned or vulnerable.
Samia also urged communities to strengthen systems that protect children and prevent cases of abandonment. She encouraged parents facing difficult circumstances to seek help from local authorities and social welfare officers rather than abandoning their children.
Child protection advocates say the President’s decision highlights the importance of leadership in addressing social issues affecting children. Tanzania, like many countries, occasionally records cases where newborns are abandoned due to economic hardship, social stigma or family challenges.
Authorities in Tabora say they will continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the infant’s abandonment, although they acknowledge that tracing the mother may be difficult given the limited information.
Samia assured the public that the baby will receive proper care, protectio and opportunities for a good future.
The adoption has also sparked conversations across Tanzania about compassion, responsibility and the need for stronger community support systems for vulnerable families.
