From Rivals To Allies: Prosper Kururagire’s Strategy That Neutralised Opposition In Mbarara

Mbarara’s political landscape has not always been uniformly NRM. Over the years, opposition groups have made inroads, particularly among urban voters and the youth. However, as the 2026 elections approach, political observers note a clear shift—one many attribute to the leadership of NRM Chairman Prosper Tuhaise Kururagire.
Kururagire’s strategy has been notably different from confrontational politics. Rather than demonising opposition supporters, he has prioritised engagement, dialogue, and reintegration. Former opposition figures have increasingly crossed back to NRM, citing respect, inclusion, and economic opportunity as key motivators.
“He doesn’t treat you like an enemy for disagreeing,” said one former opposition mobiliser now aligned with NRM. “He listens, then convinces.”
This approach has helped turn Mbarara into what many now describe as a solid NRM zone ahead of 2026. Party activities have become more coordinated, rallies better attended, and internal disputes significantly reduced.
Kururagire’s business background has played a role here as well. As a major employer and celebrated money mogul in Mbarara, he commands respect across political divides. Many residents interact with him not as a politician, but as an employer and community stakeholder.
The NRM office he built using personal resources has also become a neutral space where political differences are discussed and resolved. Analysts say such infrastructure is often overlooked but critical in sustaining party dominance during election cycles.
As Uganda moves closer to 2026, Kururagire’s ability to convert political rivals into allies may prove one of NRM’s strongest assets in western Uganda.
