Kenya: Six people have been confirmed dead after a helicopter crashed and burst into flames in the Chepkiep area of Mosop Constituency, Nandi County, on Saturday afternoon.

Nandi County Police Commander Samuel Mukuusi said the aircraft went down at about 4:45pm, killing all six occupants on board. The identities of the victims had not been officially released by press time as authorities worked to notify next of kin.

Witnesses reported seeing the helicopter lose altitude before crashing and being quickly engulfed in flames. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising from the scene as residents rushed to offer assistance before emergency responders arrived.

Police and rescue teams cordoned off the area as investigations into the cause of the crash commenced.

According to flight tracking data from Flightradar24, the aircraft departed Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) at approximately 11:02am on February 28, 2026. However, details regarding its intended destination were not immediately available.

Authorities identified the aircraft as an Airbus Helicopters H125, registration number 5Y-DSB. The helicopter is reportedly owned by a Nairobi-based company operating out of Wilson Airport.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the crash site, with first responders working to contain the blaze and secure the wreckage. Images and videos circulating online showed the aircraft completely destroyed by fire.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority is expected to lead a detailed probe into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including technical, weather, and operational factors.

Saturday’s tragedy adds to growing concerns over aviation safety, as investigators now begin the painstaking process of determining what led to the fatal accident in Mosop.
