President Yoweri Museveni has disclosed that he recently survived a minor road scare while driving himself and members of his family at his country ranch in Kisozi.

The President made the revelation on Wednesday during the Tarehe Sita thanksgiving event in Kampala, recounting how he momentarily lost control of a vehicle in his official motorcade while engaging in conversation with his wife and daughter.

According to Mr. Museveni, the incident occurred “a few days ago” as he drove a Toyota Land Cruiser around his ranch. He explained that he became distracted while pointing out different tree species to his daughter during the drive.

“I was driving with Mama (First Lady Janet) and daughter and I became a botanist, showing my daughter the different tree species while driving,” the President narrated. “I got diverted and almost got off the road. We could have had an accident. But God brought me back.”

The 81-year-old leader used the incident as a metaphor, likening Ugandans to passengers in a car who may unknowingly endanger their journey by distracting the driver. He emphasized the importance of focus and discipline, both on the road and in national affairs.

President Museveni is known for occasionally taking the wheel himself while traveling within his ranches and country home, despite the presence of a full presidential motorcade. Over the years, some observers have raised concerns about the practice, citing security and safety considerations.

However, the President defended his driving credentials, noting his long experience behind the wheel. “I am a qualified driver; you know that I even drove a seven-tonne lorry in 1972 when we were attacking Mbarara,” he said.

Mr. Museveni was in Kisozi last weekend, where he attended several engagements, including the second edition of the Jazz with Jajja interaction with Ugandan youths.

No injuries were reported from the recent incident, and the President assured the public that he remains in good health and fully capable of executing his duties.
