Police in Katwe have arrested 29 suspects following a targeted operation aimed at dismantling motorcycle theft networks in parts of Kampala.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the operation was carried out on April 17, 2026, in response to growing public concern over rampant theft of motorcycles, commonly known as boda bodas, in the area.
The intelligence-led crackdown focused on Ndeeba and Muganzirwaza zones, including Mutebi Zone in Rubaga Division. All the suspects arrested are male and are currently in custody pending further investigations.
During the operation, police recovered a number of suspected stolen motorcycle items, including 24 spare parts and several old number plates believed to have been tampered with or removed from stolen bikes.
Among the number plates recovered are UFY 763/A, UGG 874/E, UMA 304DR, UET 612/L, and UMA 267GT, which police say could help trace stolen motorcycles and link suspects to ongoing cases.
Authorities also cordoned off 10 shops in Muganzirwaza, which are pending thorough searches as investigations continue.
Police say the operation is part of broader efforts to curb rising urban crime and restore public confidence, particularly among boda boda operators who have been frequent targets of theft.
“We thank members of the public who brought this concern to our attention,” Owoyesigyire said, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in fighting crime.
The police have vowed to sustain the operations until the theft networks are fully dismantled and those responsible are brought to justice.
