Security has been tightened around the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom headquarters in Hoima City after police and Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) deployed heavily armed personnel following intelligence of an alleged plan by a group of youths to storm the Kingdom premises.
By 9am on Monday, security officers had surrounded the Rukurato, the Kingdom’s main administrative chambers, restricting access to the premises. Additional personnel were deployed around the palace and strategic points within Hoima City, while others patrolled the city centre.
The deployment has heightened attention around the Kingdom headquarters, although police said the operation was intended to prevent possible unrest rather than respond to an incident of violence.
Albertine Region Police spokesperson SP Julius Hakiza said security agencies received information indicating that some youths were planning to storm the headquarters and cause chaos.
“We received intelligence indicating that a group of youth were planning to storm the headquarters to cause chaos,” Hakiza said in a telephone interview.
Hakiza said the joint operation involving police and the military was aimed at preventing the alleged action and maintaining public order.
He urged residents to remain calm and avoid gatherings or activities that could trigger confrontation with security forces.
Police have not identified the youths allegedly planning to storm the Kingdom headquarters, nor have they publicly disclosed the specific intelligence behind the deployment.
The security presence was particularly visible around the Rukurato and palace, with officers stationed at strategic points as authorities maintained the cordon around the Kingdom premises.
The operation comes at a time of heightened attention around the affairs of the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, making the heavy security presence a notable development among Kingdom subjects and residents of Hoima.
Despite the heightened deployment, police maintained that the operation was preventive and intended to ensure that any potential disruption was contained before it occurred.
Security personnel remained deployed around the headquarters as of Monday morning as authorities continued monitoring the situation.
Residents were advised to remain peaceful and allow security agencies to handle any concerns through established channels.
