Horror Vs Panic: ‘Witch Doctor’ Caught Smuggling Live Snake In Bus Luggage

Authorities in Nairobi are investigating a dramatic cross-border incident after a man described as a spiritual leader was found transporting a live snake on a passenger bus, sparking widespread public debate and viral speculation online.
The incident unfolded at the Namanga border, a major transit point between Tanzania and Kenya. The bus was en route from Dar es Salaam to Nairobi when it was stopped for routine inspection by members of a Joint Operations Committee comprising police and wildlife officials.
According to officials, the vehicle had declared cargo labeled as motor vehicle spare parts. However, during a standard security check, officers opened several boxes and discovered a live snake concealed inside.
“The consignment was declared as vehicle spares, but upon inspection during routine rummaging, a live snake was found hidden in the cargo,” an official involved in the operation said.
The man linked to the consignment reportedly claimed the reptile was intended for “further prayers,” a statement that has fueled speculation about the use of animals in spiritual or ritual practices. Authorities have not confirmed the exact purpose of the transport, and investigations are ongoing.
The bus driver and conductors have been arrested and are being held at Namanga Police Station to assist with the investigation. Officials say the origin and intended destination of the snake consignment have not yet been fully established.
Authorities also issued a stern warning to individuals involved in illegal wildlife trade and undeclared cross-border business.
“We warn all those engaging in illegal trafficking or conducting business without proper documentation that they will face the full force of the law,” the official added.
The seized reptile has since been placed in the custody of wildlife authorities for assessment and safe handling.
The incident quickly gained traction on social media in April 2026, with some posts sensationally claiming the snake measured up to 100 metres in length. Experts have dismissed such claims as highly exaggerated, noting that even the largest known snake species do not reach such sizes. Reports instead suggest the animal was likely a large python, similar to previous cases, including a recent incident involving a 13-foot snake discovered aboard public transport.
Beyond the spectacle, the incident has reignited concerns about wildlife smuggling and the misuse of animals in dubious spiritual practices. Kenya has previously recorded cases where individuals used snakes to intimidate victims or promote claims of supernatural powers, sometimes as part of fraudulent schemes.
As investigations continue, authorities say the case highlights ongoing challenges in monitoring cross-border trade and enforcing wildlife protection laws in the region.
