Security agencies have launched investigations following a break-in at the Bank of Uganda headquarters in Kampala, where unknown assailants made off with seven laptops in a daring early morning raid.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, May 4, 2026, at the central bank’s premises on Kampala Road, specifically targeting the commercial offices located in the basement of one of the buildings near City Square.
Preliminary findings suggest the attackers gained access through a gate opposite City Square and remained inside the facility for nearly three hours before leaving with the stolen equipment. Investigators suspect possible collusion involving some staff members and elements within the security team.
“Yes, we had a break-in and seven laptops were stolen,” a source at the bank confirmed.
In response, a joint team of security agencies, including the Uganda Police Force, the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces, the Defence Intelligence and Security, and the Internal Security Organisation, visited the scene and collected forensic evidence.
A police sniffer dog deployed during the investigation reportedly led officers to several buildings in downtown Kampala, including Kalungi Plaza, Kirumira Towers, and Mutaasa Kafeero buildings, where the stolen items were suspected to have been taken.
Security forces sealed off the premises during an operation that lasted nearly eight hours, restricting movement in and out of the buildings as searches were conducted. Several suspects believed to be involved in dealing stolen mobile phones were arrested during the crackdown.
In a statement issued later Monday, the central bank confirmed the incident, noting that it had been detected earlier in the day and is under active investigation.
“The matter is currently under investigation, and the Bank of Uganda is working closely with relevant security agencies to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and take appropriate action,” the statement read.
The bank assured the public that its core operations and services remain fully functional and were not affected by the breach.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over security at one of the country’s most sensitive financial institutions, with authorities now working to determine how the attackers managed to access and operate within the highly guarded premises.
