The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Makindye has remanded a Kampala businessman to Luzira Government Prison over the fatal shooting of his house help’s alleged lover in Bunga, Makindye Division.
John Peter Mulwana, 41, appeared before Magistrate Sarah Basemera on Thursday and was charged with murder and attempted murder following the April 26 shooting that left one man dead and a woman injured.
Mulwana was not allowed to take plea because the offences are capital in nature and can only be tried by the High Court. He was remanded until his next court appearance.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred at around 9pm in Bunga-Kalungu, when Kevin Atwizukire, reportedly the boyfriend of Mulwana’s house help, Joan Nerima, visited her at the residence where she worked.
Court heard that the residence’s gateman, identified as Geld Tumwekwase, allegedly informed Mulwana that an unknown man had entered the maid’s quarters.
Investigators say Mulwana later went to the room and knocked on the door. When Nerima opened, she reportedly pleaded for mercy, but Mulwana, who was allegedly armed with a pistol, shot her in the shoulder.
Police further allege that Atwizukire attempted to flee during the commotion but was shot in the back near the gate as he tried to escape.
The victim died at the scene.
Detectives recovered two spent cartridges from the crime scene as investigations into the shooting continue.
Nerima was rushed to the hospital by police officers for treatment, while Atwizukire’s body was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
The shocking incident has sparked debate among residents in Makindye over gun violence and the misuse of firearms in domestic disputes.
