Drama In The Jungle: Kibale Chimpanzees Elect New King After Years Of Bloody Fights

Deep in the forests of Kibale National Park, a dramatic struggle for dominance, survival and leadership has finally come to an end after a new alpha male chimpanzee emerged victorious following nearly two years of unrest within one of the park’s largest chimp communities.
The Kanyantare chimpanzee community, which inhabits the Kanyanchu sector of the park, recently settled on Rukara as its new dominant leader after months of intense rivalry and internal conflict that followed the death of former alpha male Nfuuzi in November 2023.
Nfuuzi, according to ranger guides at the park, was allegedly attacked and killed by a group of six dissident chimpanzees, an incident that created a leadership vacuum among the over 120-member chimp community and triggered prolonged instability.
Wildlife experts and ranger guides describe the succession battle as one marked by betrayal, shifting alliances, aggression and survival instincts, mirroring political power struggles often witnessed among humans.
Richard Alicwamu, a ranger guide at Kibale, revealed that one of Rukara’s strongest rivals, Bahoire, was reportedly among the chimpanzees linked to the attack on Nfuuzi.
“This could have contributed to why he failed to gain full support from the majority of the community members,” Alicwamu explained, noting that chimpanzees exhibit social behaviours strikingly similar to those of humans due to their close genetic relationship.
Chimpanzees are believed to share approximately 98.7 percent of their DNA with human beings, making them among humanity’s closest relatives.
Bosco Bwambale, another ranger guide, explained that leadership succession among chimpanzees is often determined through physical displays, strategic alliances and direct confrontations.
“A male remains alpha as long as he maintains strength, influence and support from the group,” Bwambale noted.
He added that older alpha males often lose power once they begin sensing threats from younger and more energetic challengers.
According to researchers, alpha males enjoy enormous influence within chimp communities, including priority access to food, mating privileges and authority over troop movement and security.
Rukara, who has now consolidated power, reportedly leads the group during food searches and community movements. Observers say even his former rival Bahoire has since been seen submitting to the new leader.
Researchers studying chimpanzee behaviour at Kibale say community breakaways are also common once groups grow too large.
Margaret Kobusingye, a chimpanzee researcher, pointed to the famous Ngogo chimpanzee community, which split after expanding to more than 200 individuals.
The Kanyantare chimpanzee community is estimated to roam across an area spanning between 25 and 35 square kilometres within the expansive tropical forest ecosystem.
Beyond the dramatic leadership battles, Kibale National Park remains one of Africa’s most important primate habitats and a major tourism destination in Uganda.
Often referred to as the “Primate Capital of the World,” the 766-square-kilometre forest is home to at least 13 species of primates, including an estimated 1,450 chimpanzees spread across 13 communities.
The park also hosts forest elephants, hundreds of bird species, reptiles, butterflies and over 250 tree species, making it one of Uganda’s richest biodiversity zones.
Only five chimpanzee communities in Kibale are currently habituated for tourism and research activities, attracting scientists and tourists from around the globe eager to observe the complex social lives of man’s closest relatives in the wild.
