A Trinity Express bus travelling from Uganda to Rwanda caught fire on Monday evening as it approached Kigali, destroying the vehicle and passengers’ luggage, although no fatalities were reported.
The incident occurred near Nyacyonga, on the outskirts of the Rwandan capital, where the bus was reportedly engulfed in flames.
Images and videos from the scene showed the bus burning at night, with thick smoke rising above the road as bystanders watched from a distance.
Eyewitnesses said the vehicle was completely destroyed, together with passengers’ luggage. The cause of the fire had not been established by the time of publication.
The incident has, however, renewed concerns about the mechanical condition and safety standards of passenger buses operating on the busy Uganda-Rwanda route.
The latest incident is likely to intensify calls for transport operators on regional routes to strengthen routine inspections, preventive maintenance and emergency preparedness.
The Uganda-Rwanda route carries thousands of passengers and traders, connecting Kampala with Kigali and serving as an important link within the East African Community.
Authorities and transport regulators in both countries could face renewed scrutiny over the enforcement of passenger safety requirements, particularly concerning the roadworthiness and maintenance of long-distance buses.
As investigations into the latest fire continue, passengers are expected to demand greater assurance that buses operating between Uganda, Rwanda and other regional destinations are regularly inspected and maintained to prevent avoidable tragedies.
