Meet Dr. James Musinguzi: The Conservation Giant Transforming Uganda’s Wildlife Sector

Dr. James Musinguzi is one of Uganda’s most accomplished conservation leaders, researchers, and wildlife education champions, whose impact on biodiversity conservation has earned him recognition both locally and internationally.
Currently serving as the Executive Director of the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Dr. Musinguzi has more than 20 years of experience in wildlife conservation, environmental management, public administration, research, and institutional leadership.
Before joining UWA’s top leadership, Dr. Musinguzi served for close to two decades at the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC), where he rose through the ranks from Education Officer to Executive Director. Under his stewardship, UWEC transformed into one of Africa’s leading wildlife conservation and education centres.
His leadership saw the development of modern wildlife infrastructure, strengthened conservation education programs, and improved Uganda’s international visibility in tourism and wildlife conservation. During his tenure, UWEC was ranked among the best zoos and conservation education institutions in East, West and Central Africa by the Pan African Association of Zoos and Aquaria (PAAZA).
Dr. Musinguzi is also a respected academic and researcher. He holds a PhD in Management specializing in Environment and Natural Resources Management from Mbarara University of Science and Technology, alongside a Master’s degree in Business Administration, a Master of Science in Environment Conservation Biology, and several professional certifications in leadership, governance, conservation, and project management.
Beyond Uganda, he has represented the country at major international conservation conferences in Australia, the United States, Germany, Spain, South Africa, Japan, Thailand, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, presenting papers on wildlife conservation, climate change, community engagement, and sustainable tourism.
Dr. Musinguzi currently serves as Chairman of the Pan African Association of Zoos and Aquaria and has also served on several international conservation bodies, including the World Association of Zoos and Aquaria.
His outstanding contribution to conservation and environmental education has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Golden Jubilee Medal awarded by Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in recognition of his exemplary leadership and service to Uganda.
Known for his passion for wildlife protection, community conservation, research, and youth empowerment, Dr. Musinguzi continues to inspire a new generation of conservationists while steering Uganda’s wildlife sector toward greater sustainability and global recognition.
