Fresh details emerging from the National Resistance Movement’s ongoing internal politics indicate that Mbale City Woman MP Lydia Wanyoto Mutende is officially among the leaders who have expressed interest in the position of Deputy Speaker of Uganda’s incoming 12th Parliament.
A newly circulating list of aspirants shows Wanyoto among a strong field of NRM legislators seeking the influential parliamentary position, further confirming the growing momentum behind her candidacy within party circles.
Other names appearing on the list include Rose Obigah, Catherine Lamwaka, Thomas Tayebwa, Susan Nakawuki Nsambu, Patrick Ogwang Obura and Henry Tumukunde Kakurugu among others.
However, political attention inside the NRM increasingly appears to be settling on Lydia Wanyoto, whose supporters argue that her experience, loyalty to the ruling party, and strong mobilization credentials make her one of the most suitable candidates for the role.
Growing Support Inside Nrm
Days after reports first emerged of behind-the-scenes lobbying within the NRM, more party mobilizers and women leaders are now openly rallying behind Wanyoto’s bid, insisting that the Deputy Speakership should remain in female hands if the Speakership is eventually taken by a male legislator.
Supporters say such a decision would reinforce the NRM’s long-standing commitment to gender inclusion and women’s participation in national leadership.
Within party structures, Wanyoto is increasingly being presented as a tested cadre who has remained visible in mobilization activities across the country at a time when the ruling party is preparing for the crucial 2026 general elections.

Several NRM grassroots coordinators argue that leaders who actively defend and market the party should also be considered when key national positions are being shared.
“Lydia Wanyoto has consistently stood with the party both locally and internationally. Many cadres believe this is the kind of loyalty that deserves recognition,” one mobilizer from eastern Uganda said.
Experience Seen As Major Advantage
Beyond mobilization politics, Wanyoto’s supporters are heavily emphasizing her extensive public service background.
Over the years, she has served in regional and continental assignments, including roles connected to African Union peace and governance structures. She also previously represented Uganda in the East African Legislative Assembly before becoming Mbale City Woman MP.
Political observers say this blend of international exposure and legislative experience gives her a strong profile for presiding over parliamentary business in the next term.
Her academic grounding in law, gender, and human rights studies is also being cited by supporters as evidence that she possesses the administrative discipline and political maturity required for the Deputy Speaker’s office.
Internal Calculations Continue
The latest nomination list is expected to intensify internal discussions within the NRM as different camps push for influence over the leadership of the 12th Parliament.
Analysts say the contest is no longer just about parliamentary management, but also about rewarding loyalty, maintaining regional balance, strengthening women’s representation, and consolidating party unity ahead of 2026.
As has traditionally been the case in sensitive leadership contests within the ruling party, many eyes are now turning to Yoweri Museveni, who is expected to play a decisive role in guiding consensus on the final candidates.
For Wanyoto’s supporters, the publication of her nomination is already being viewed as a major signal that her candidacy is gaining serious traction within the ruling party establishment.
