Uganda Wildlife Authority has announced flexible measures for the rescheduling of gorilla trekking permits following growing concerns over the Ebola outbreak in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo and heightened health surveillance measures in Uganda.
In a notice issued by the Office of the Executive Director, Dr James Musinguzi, dated May 20, 2026, the authority acknowledged an increase in requests from tour operators and travelers seeking to postpone gorilla trekking activities due to fears linked to the Ebola situation in the region.
According to the statement, UWA will now consider permit rescheduling requests at no additional cost, provided there is clear confirmation from overseas travel agents or clients indicating that travelers are unable to proceed with their trips because of Ebola-related concerns.
The wildlife authority emphasized that all communication supporting such requests must accompany the rescheduling application for verification purposes.
“Upon verification, UWA will approve the rescheduling of the permits at no additional cost, subject to availability of permits on the requested alternative dates,” the notice stated.
However, the authority clarified that rescheduling will only be allowed for dates where permits are available in the reservation system. In addition, permits booked during the low tourism season can only be moved to other low-season dates.
The move is seen as a relief to tour operators and international travelers who have expressed uncertainty about travel plans amid regional health concerns. Gorilla trekking remains one of Uganda’s leading tourism attractions and a major contributor to the country’s tourism revenue.
UWA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the tourism industry while maintaining the integrity and fairness of the reservation system.
The notice was signed by Executive Director Dr. James Musinguzi, who reiterated the authority’s dedication to conserving wildlife while ensuring flexibility for affected travelers and tourism stakeholders.
