Three people have died and four others sustained injuries following a tragic road accident involving a vehicle and a crossing elephant in Murchison Falls National Park.
The fatal crash occurred on the night of May 24, 2026, at around 8:00 p.m. along the Arua Road section that passes through the national park in Nwoya District.
According to preliminary police investigations, a Toyota Hiace registration number UA 20121AA carrying seven officials from the Uganda Revenue Authority was travelling from Arua back to Kampala after official duty when it struck a crossing elephant.
Traffic Police Spokesperson Michael Kananura said the driver lost control of the vehicle immediately after the collision, leading to the deadly crash.
“Three occupants died on the spot while four others, including the driver, sustained injuries,” Kananura said.
Police officers responded swiftly to the scene and rushed the injured victims to Kiryandongo Hospital for emergency treatment before they were later transferred to Kampala for further medical management.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Anaka Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem examinations.
Authorities have since urged motorists to exercise extreme caution while driving through national parks and wildlife-protected areas, particularly during night hours when animals frequently cross roads.
Police also reminded drivers to strictly observe speed limits within conservation areas to help prevent similar tragedies.
