Police have launched investigations into the collapse of a building under construction in Kisota Zone, Kikaaya Parish, Kawempe Division, as rescue teams continue searching through the rubble amid fears that more people could still be trapped.

The incident occurred at about 1:00 pm when the structure suddenly gave way, triggering a major emergency response involving police, rescue workers and local residents.

According to preliminary reports, nine people were rescued from the debris and rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment. Authorities had not yet disclosed the identities of the victims or the extent of their injuries by press time.

Rescue and excavation operations are still ongoing as emergency teams work cautiously through the wreckage in search of possible survivors. Witnesses at the scene said there were concerns that additional workers could remain trapped beneath the collapsed structure.

Police spokesperson SP Rachel Kawala confirmed that investigations had commenced to establish the cause of the collapse and determine whether construction regulations had been violated.

“We have opened inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including possible negligence and non-compliance with building standards,” Kawala said.

She added that efforts were underway to trace the site supervisor and other individuals responsible for overseeing the construction project so that they can assist investigators.

The collapse attracted large crowds of residents, many of whom gathered at the scene as rescue personnel used heavy equipment and manual excavation techniques to search through the debris.

The incident has once again raised concerns about safety standards at construction sites in Kampala, where rapid urban development has occasionally been accompanied by accidents linked to poor workmanship, inadequate supervision and failure to adhere to approved building plans.
