The Catholic Church in Mozambique is mourning the death of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso of Quelimane, who was shot dead by unknown gunmen after they reportedly broke into his official residence in the early hours.

According to Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), the 54-year-old bishop was found dead inside the episcopal residence in Zambézia Province. Investigators say the attackers entered the premises and fatally shot him in the chest using an AKM-type rifle before fleeing the scene.

SERNIC spokesperson Maximino Amílcar confirmed that a full investigation has been launched, although authorities have not yet established a motive for the killing.

News of the bishop’s death was announced by Archbishop Inácio Saúre, President of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique, who informed members of the Consolata Missionary Institute (IMC), to which Bishop Afonso belonged.

Pope Leo XIV expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, assuring the Church in Mozambique of his prayers and calling for peace in the wake of the violence. In a message of condolence, the Pontiff prayed for comfort for the faithful and urged an end to acts of violence.

The killing has sent shockwaves through Mozambique’s Catholic community and beyond. Fr Cassiano Kalima, the regional superior of the Consolata Missionaries in Mozambique, called on Christians to pray for the late bishop, his family, the missionary congregation and the local Church.

Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo described Bishop Afonso’s death as an “irreparable loss” to both the nation and the Christian community, praising his humility, pastoral dedication and commitment to peace and reconciliation.

Popularly known as Don Osório, Bishop Afonso was one of Mozambique’s most respected Church leaders. In addition to serving as Bishop of Quelimane, he was Secretary-General of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique and had recently been appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira.

Born in Ribaue, Nampula Province, on May 6, 1972, he joined the Consolata Missionaries and made his solemn profession in 2001 before being ordained a priest on November 3, 2002.

His rise in Church leadership saw him appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Maputo in 2023 before taking charge of the Diocese of Quelimane, where he was installed as bishop on August 31, 2025.

A respected biblical scholar, Bishop Afonso pursued studies in Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rome and Jerusalem. He earned a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and served in various pastoral, educational and missionary roles, including work at the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelisation.

He was also known for championing the cause of Mozambican catechists and families killed during the country’s civil war, particularly the Martyrs of Guiúa, who were murdered in 1992 while attending a catechetical formation programme.

Remembered as an intelligent, humble and deeply committed missionary, Bishop Afonso leaves behind a legacy of service, faith and dedication to the growth of the Catholic Church in Mozambique.
