Three people have died and 10 others sustained injuries after a Toyota Hiace carrying mourners crashed along the Ishaka–Kagamba Road in Bushenyi District.
The crash occurred at about 4:40pm on Monday, September 7, 2026, at Omukatagu. The vehicle, registration number UA 836AM, was travelling from Kashaka in Mbarara District to Rwererere in Rukungiri District.
According to police, the vehicle was transporting mourners when the driver reportedly lost control while negotiating a corner. Preliminary investigations indicate that excessive speed may have caused the crash.
The three deceased were adult males whose identities had not been established by press time.
The injured victims were identified as Kemigisha Apophia, Arineitwe Dalington, Rwakimari Geofrey, Kwikiriza Arthur, Tusiime Markivile, Busingye Georgia, Niwasima Mackline, Twinamatsiko Robert, Agaba Goden and Owamatsiko Brian.
The injured were rushed to Kitagata Hospital and KIU Teaching Hospital for medical treatment.
SP Michael Kananura, the public relations officer in the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, said the preliminary findings point to the driver’s failure to negotiate the bend safely.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver failed to negotiate a corner due to excessive speed,” Kananura said.
The identity and other particulars of the driver had not been established by Monday evening.
Police officers led by IP Nkwasibwe Alfred visited and documented the crash scene. The wreckage was later towed to Ishaka Police Station pending inspection by an Inspector of Vehicles.
Kananura urged motorists to exercise caution and observe speed limits, particularly when approaching bends and other high-risk sections of the road.
He warned that speeding reduces a driver’s ability to react in time and safely negotiate corners, increasing the risk of losing control.
Police said investigations into the crash are ongoing as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
