The Head of the Office of the National Chairman (ONC), Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo, has called upon Ugandans to actively participate in the forthcoming Local Council I (LC1), Local Council II (LC2) and Women Council elections, urging voters to elect leaders of their choice who will champion the interests of their communities.

Addressing the media on Monday, Namyalo emphasized that the grassroots elections, scheduled for July 28, 2026, present an opportunity for citizens to shape leadership at the village level by voting for candidates they trust and believe can effectively serve their communities. The Electoral Commission has indeed scheduled polling for LC I chairpersons on July 28, 2026, following the nomination and campaign programme.

Speaking passionately about the importance of grassroots democracy, Namyalo urged every Ugandan to take part in the electoral process.

“I call upon all Ugandans, for purposes of sanity and fighting impunity, kindly participate, take part and be part of this exercise. We cannot do this work without the people in their respective villages,” she said.

She stressed that voters should freely elect leaders of their own choice rather than individuals imposed upon them.

“Support your LC1 chairperson the one of your choice, not the one who is enforced on you. Stand behind the leader you believe will empathize with your challenges and fight for the good of your village.”

ONC Secures Over 31,000 NRM Flag Bearers

Namyalo revealed that the Office of the National Chairman, working closely with other National Resistance Movement (NRM) structures, had successfully secured 31,629 LC1 flag bearers across the country.

She noted that the achievement was the result of collaboration between the ONC, the NRM Secretariat led by Secretary General Richard Todwong, and the NRM Electoral Commission chaired by Dr. Tanga Odoi.

According to Namyalo, any remaining vacancies would be filled by the NRM Electoral Commission to ensure the party fields candidates in all areas ahead of the elections.

“Our responsibility now is to form a winning team that will compete with independents and the opposition. We cannot achieve this alone without the support of the people,” she said.

She further appealed to current local council leaders and party coordinators to intensify mobilization efforts in support of NRM flag bearers contesting at both LC1 and LC2 levels.

Women Urged To Elect Compassionate Leaders

A significant portion of Namyalo’s address focused on the forthcoming Women Council elections.

She challenged women across Uganda to elect leaders who genuinely understand and advocate for women’s concerns instead of leaders driven by personal interests.

“We have lagged behind as women, and we are the ones who continue to suffer. This time, we must support women leaders who will genuinely fight for fellow women,” she said.

Namyalo cautioned against electing leaders lacking compassion and urged women not to be swayed by individuals seeking leadership for prestige rather than service.

“As women of this nation, let us not be hoodwinked by self-seekers. Let us vote for women who will lobby for our priorities and ensure our needs are addressed.”

She also made a special appeal to single mothers, describing them as a significant voting bloc whose participation could help elect leaders committed to improving the welfare of women and families.

Namyalo encouraged all eligible voters to turn up in large numbers on polling day to witness and safeguard the democratic process in their villages.

“Come on July 28 and participate in the LC1 and LC2 elections. Witness your election, witness your chairman, witness the process and witness your victory,” she said.
