The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has unveiled a fresh parliamentary committee reshuffle, with Budiope East MP Moses Magogo dropped from the influential Budget Committee after five years, while former Speaker Anita Among has been assigned to the Committee on Government Assurance and Implementation.
The changes, announced by Government Chief Whip Jane Ruth Aceng, also saw Patrick Isiagi, the MP for Kachumbala County and uncle to Anita Among, removed from the powerful Budget Committee.
Magogo’s reassignment to the Committee on Human Rights marks one of the most notable changes in the new committee lineup, ending his five-year stint on the Budget Committee, one of Parliament’s most influential committees responsible for scrutinising government expenditure and budget allocations.
Meanwhile, Among, the Bukedea District Woman Representative, has been designated to the Committee on Government Assurance and Implementation, which monitors whether government ministries, departments and agencies honour commitments, promises and undertakings made on the floor of Parliament.
The committee plays a critical oversight role by tracking the implementation of government policies and ensuring accountability for pledges made to legislators and the public.
The Opposition has designated Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake as Chairperson of the committee, with Soroti Woman MP Anna Adeke serving as Vice Chairperson.
In another notable assignment, former Minister of Finance Matia Kasaija has been designated to serve on both the Committee on Agriculture and the Committee on National Economy, placing the veteran legislator on two key committees that oversee Uganda’s economic planning, agricultural development and investment policies.
The reshuffle comes as Parliament prepares to begin committee business for the new session, with several experienced legislators taking on fresh oversight responsibilities.
Away from the committee changes, legislators also raised pressing national concerns during Tuesday’s sitting.
Soroti City Woman MP Joan Acom Alobo called on government to intervene in the case of three Ugandans reportedly imprisoned in Thailand after being recruited through an external labour agency.
Alobo said the workers travelled to Thailand in search of employment but later ended up in prison under unclear circumstances, raising questions about the protection and monitoring of Ugandan migrant workers.
Responding to the matter, Government Chief Whip Jane Ruth Aceng pledged to engage the responsible minister and report back to Parliament.
Meanwhile, Bukoto East MP Sarah Babirye Kityo urged government to urgently rehabilitate the Buzirango–Bwajja–Kabasese Road in Masaka District, saying it becomes impassable whenever it rains and disrupts movement for residents and schoolchildren.
She appealed for the construction of a flyover or raised crossing to ensure safe access throughout the year.
The latest committee reshuffle is expected to shape Parliament’s oversight agenda in the current session, with several high-profile legislators assuming new roles in committees central to government accountability, public finance and national development.
