The Ministry of Local Government has directed all local governments across Uganda to officially name every street and road within their jurisdictions by August 30, 2026, in a move aimed at improving service delivery, security, emergency response and urban planning.
The directive was issued by the Minister of Local Government, Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, who instructed all LC V chairpersons, city mayors, division mayors, town council mayors and sub-county chiefs to ensure the exercise is completed within the stipulated timeframe.
According to the minister, the directive follows guidance from the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who also serves as the Senior Presidential Adviser on Special Operations.
Barugahara said the nationwide street-naming initiative is intended to strengthen public administration by making it easier to identify locations, enhance emergency response, improve security operations, facilitate urban planning and attract investment.
He emphasized that every local government must ensure all roads and streets under its jurisdiction are assigned official names before the August 30 deadline.
The minister further encouraged local authorities to adopt names that honour individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Uganda, Africa and humanity.
Among those proposed for recognition are traditional rulers, cultural leaders, kings, historical figures, National Resistance Army (NRA) liberation and resistance heroes, Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) heroes, former presidents, national leaders, and distinguished Ugandans in public service, education, science, business, sports, arts, culture and community development.
Barugahara directed local governments to forward the approved street names, together with the relevant council resolutions, to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government.
The submissions, he said, must be received before the installation of official street name signs, which is expected to begin by September 5, 2026.
In addition to the street-naming exercise, the minister urged local leaders to prioritize cleanliness in their areas, saying maintaining clean cities, municipalities, town councils and villages is a key indicator of good governance.
“A clean environment reflects good leadership, effective service delivery, and respect for our citizens,” Barugahara said.
The directive is expected to standardize addressing systems across the country, making it easier for emergency services, security agencies, businesses, delivery companies and the public to locate homes, institutions and businesses while supporting Uganda’s ongoing urbanization and infrastructure development.
