The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has launched a landmark wildlife translocation exercise to restore the endangered Nubian giraffe to Ajai Wildlife Reserve, reinforcing Uganda’s position as a global leader in wildlife conservation while creating new opportunities for tourism and biodiversity restoration.
The ongoing operation involves relocating four Nubian giraffes from Murchison Falls Conservation Area to Ajai Wildlife Reserve in northwestern Uganda, where the iconic species once roamed.
The exercise is being led by UWA’s Assistant Commissioner for Veterinary Services, Dr Patrick Atimnedi, and forms part of the authority’s long-term conservation strategy to establish healthy giraffe populations across Uganda’s protected areas while reducing the ecological risks associated with concentrating the species in a single ecosystem.
Speaking during the exercise, Dr Atimnedi said the translocation is being conducted in accordance with internationally recognised conservation standards.
“This translocation follows the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) guidelines for conservation translocations, which require scientific evidence that the habitat is suitable before wildlife is relocated,” he said.
Extensive ecological research dating back to the early 1900s confirmed that Ajai Wildlife Reserve contains abundant acacia vegetation capable of sustaining Nubian giraffes, making it an ideal habitat for the species’ return.
The reintroduction is expected to restore vital ecological processes because giraffes naturally regulate woody vegetation and contribute to maintaining healthy ecosystems.
For UWA, the exercise marks another significant milestone in a conservation programme that has earned Uganda international recognition. The country is home to the world’s largest remaining wild population of Nubian giraffes, making their protection a conservation priority of both national and global importance.
The authority has built an impressive record in wildlife restoration over the past decade.
In 2015, UWA successfully relocated 15 Nubian giraffes, comprising four males and 11 females, from Murchison Falls Conservation Area to Lake Mburo National Park. That founder population has since grown significantly, providing strong evidence that science-driven translocations can successfully restore endangered wildlife populations.
Following that success, UWA carried out additional giraffe translocations to Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve on two occasions, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC), and now Ajai Wildlife Reserve.
The latest operation is being implemented under UWA’s Giraffe Conservation Strategy with technical support from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, which has strengthened Uganda’s wildlife management capacity through specialised conservation training, including wildlife translocation programmes in Namibia.
Beyond safeguarding biodiversity, UWA says the return of giraffes will significantly boost tourism in Ajai Wildlife Reserve.
Located in northwestern Uganda, the reserve has long been recognised for its untapped tourism potential. Conservation experts believe the reintroduction of one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife species will enhance visitor experiences, attract more domestic and international tourists, and create new economic opportunities for surrounding communities through nature-based tourism.
The initiative also reflects a modern conservation approach that focuses on restoring species to landscapes where they historically existed instead of protecting isolated populations in a single location.
By establishing giraffe populations across multiple protected areas, UWA aims to improve the species’ long-term survival by reducing vulnerability to disease outbreaks, habitat degradation and the impacts of climate change.
Every stage of the operation, including habitat suitability assessments, veterinary examinations, stakeholder engagement, transportation and post-release monitoring, has been carefully planned to meet international conservation standards and maximise the animals’ chances of establishing a thriving, self-sustaining population.
As Uganda continues to strengthen its conservation efforts, the return of Nubian giraffes to Ajai Wildlife Reserve stands as another testament to UWA’s commitment to protecting the country’s natural heritage.
More than a wildlife relocation, the exercise represents the restoration of a historic ecosystem, the expansion of Uganda’s tourism offering and another important step towards securing the future of one of the world’s rarest giraffe subspecies for generations to come.
