Kenyan President William Ruto’s daughter, Charlene Ruto, has taken a major step towards marriage after getting engaged to Tanzanian technology entrepreneur Isaya Yunge in a colourful traditional ceremony that brought together two prominent East African families.

The Koito ceremony, a traditional engagement ceremony among the Kalenjin, was held on Saturday, August 9, at President Ruto’s home in Kilgoris, Narok County.

Yunge’s family travelled from Mwanza, Tanzania, to formally meet and celebrate with the Ruto family, turning the occasion into a cross-border East African gathering.

President Ruto publicly confirmed the engagement, saying he and First Lady Rachel Ruto were delighted to see their daughter begin a new chapter with Yunge.

“Today we have called you for this ceremony as our friends from Mwanza come to visit,” Ruto told guests.

In a message accompanying photographs from the event, the President congratulated the couple and assured them of their family’s support.

“As your parents, we are proud of you, we rejoice with you, and we will always stand beside you,” Ruto said.

A Blend Of Tradition And Modernity

The ceremony brought together elements of Kalenjin culture and contemporary celebrations, with guests dressed in African-themed outfits as traditional songs and dances provided entertainment.

Images from the ceremony showed Charlene and Yunge surrounded by their families, while another captured Charlene serving her father a piece of cake.

The event also attracted several senior Kenyan political figures, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

Members of the Odinga family, including Oburu Oginga, Ida Odinga, Ruth Odinga and East African Legislative Assembly member Winnie Odinga, were also reported to have attended the ceremony.

Journalist Larry Madowo was among other notable guests at the celebration.

The high-profile nature of the event attracted considerable public attention, with Kenyan media reporting that several helicopters were used to transport guests to the venue.

Who Is Isaya Yunge?

The engagement has also brought increased attention to Yunge, a Tanzanian entrepreneur whose work has focused largely on technology and creating digital solutions for young Africans.

Born and raised in Mwanza, Yunge is the co-founder and chief executive of SomaApps Technologies, the company behind SomaApp, a platform designed to help African students discover scholarship opportunities.

The idea behind the platform emerged from concerns that some scholarship opportunities were going unclaimed because potential beneficiaries either did not know about them or struggled to identify programmes for which they qualified.

Yunge has also been associated with other technology initiatives, including KAYA, an artificial intelligence-enabled smart speaker designed to collect Africa-related data, and Somafit, a smartwatch developed to monitor health indicators.

His interests span mobile technology, artificial intelligence and Internet of Things applications, with a focus on increasing the use of technology in Tanzania and across Africa.

Yunge studied at Tanzania’s Institute of Finance Management and has undertaken additional leadership and professional training through institutions and programmes linked to the University of Cambridge and the Swedish Institute.

His involvement in youth affairs dates back to his teenage years. In 2006, he was elected chairperson of the Junior Council of the United Republic of Tanzania and later participated in international youth forums, including serving as a UNICEF Africa Youth Ambassador.

His work supporting young Africans also earned international recognition, including recognition through the Queen’s Young Leaders programme in 2018.

The engagement has attracted attention not only because of Charlene’s family background but also because it brings together families from Kenya and Tanzania.

Charlene, one of President Ruto and Rachel Ruto’s children, has maintained a public profile through youth-focused initiatives and engagements in Kenya and abroad.

For the Ruto family, Saturday’s ceremony marked the formal traditional engagement of their daughter, while Yunge’s family travelled from Mwanza to participate in the cultural occasion.

The Koito ceremony represents the traditional stage of the couple’s journey towards marriage, with any subsequent wedding celebrations to be determined by the couple and their families.

The occasion has also highlighted the cultural and social ties that continue to connect Kenya and Tanzania, with the two families celebrating the union across national borders.
