A Saturday political talk show at Radio Simba was abruptly disrupted after armed men in plain clothes stormed the station and took away prominent political commentator Charles Rwomushana.
Rwomushana was participating in the station’s popular Saturday programme, Gasimbagane ne Bannamawulire, translated as “Face Off with Journalists,” when the men reportedly entered the premises and seized him.
Radio Simba later confirmed that Rwomushana had been taken from its studios at Plot 2, Corporation Rise in Kampala’s Bukoto area.
Video footage recorded during the incident showed at least four armed men dragging Rwomushana out of the station. He was seen holding a notebook as he was led away.
One of the men appeared to have a pistol, while another was carrying what appeared to be a larger firearm. A woman could also be seen approaching the armed men, seemingly attempting to find out what was happening.
The footage further showed two other men watching helplessly as the incident unfolded before Rwomushana was swiftly taken away from the premises.
The seizure comes against the backdrop of heightened attention surrounding Rwomushana’s name, which has appeared in documents linked to the ongoing trial of veteran opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye, his aide Obed Lutale and Captain Oola, who are facing treason-related charges.
Rwomushana has previously appeared on local media platforms to distance himself from suggestions that he is directly connected to the case.
His sudden removal from a radio station has therefore raised questions about the reason behind the operation and whether it could have any connection to the ongoing court proceedings.
As of Saturday afternoon, there was no official confirmation linking Rwomushana’s arrest to the Besigye case, leaving the circumstances surrounding his detention unclear.
