The Tooro Kingdom has announced Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the new Omukama, marking a major development in the kingdom’s leadership following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Prince Edward was selected by the succession committee of the Babiito royal clan, which is responsible for choosing the next monarch. According to the information released following the selection, 19 of the committee’s 21 members voted in his favour.
His selection is expected to trigger celebrations across Tooro and among members of the kingdom living in different parts of Uganda and beyond.
Prince Edward, who is professionally known in the media industry, has worked as a journalist and news anchor at Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), including presenting on UBC’s News Tonight.
He comes from a prominent royal lineage. He is the son of the late Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma and grandson of the late Omukama Sir George David Rukidi Kamurasi III, one of the most recognised monarchs in Tooro’s modern history.
His selection places him directly in the royal line as successor to Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, whose death left the kingdom preparing for a new chapter in its traditional leadership.
The decision was reached after the Babiito succession committee convened to consider the next occupant of the Tooro throne. The overwhelming vote in favour of Prince Edward is expected to pave the way for preparations for his formal enthronement.
The transition comes at a significant moment for the kingdom, which has maintained its cultural and traditional institutions while operating within Uganda’s constitutional framework.
Prince Edward’s professional background in journalism also makes his selection notable, as he moves from a public-facing career in broadcasting into one of the most prominent traditional leadership positions in western Uganda.
The formal enthronement ceremony is expected to attract members of the royal family, cultural leaders, government officials, religious leaders and thousands of subjects from across Tooro.
