A police officer died by suicide at Freedom City along Entebbe Road on Sunday after allegedly shooting and injuring a young woman and a private security guard in a dramatic incident now under investigation by Police in Katwe.
The officer, identified as Police Constable (PPC) Saul Ayijuka, reportedly opened fire at the shopping and entertainment complex, injuring 23-year-old Florence Akankunda and a private security guard before turning the weapon on himself.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said preliminary investigations indicate that the shooting could have been linked to a previous relationship between Ayijuka and Akankunda.
Akankunda sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh and was rushed to hospital for medical attention. The private security guard who was also injured was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police officers who responded to the scene secured the area and began documenting evidence as investigators sought to reconstruct the events that led to the shooting.
An AK-47 rifle believed to have been used in the incident, together with ammunition and spent cartridges, was recovered from the scene and taken into police custody as part of the investigation.
The body of Ayijuka was conveyed to Mulago Hospital, where a postmortem examination is expected to provide further information as investigators piece together the circumstances surrounding his death.
Police are now investigating what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting, including the nature of the officer’s previous relationship with Akankunda and what may have triggered the confrontation.
