President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has suspended his planned campaign rallies in the Lango sub-region, citing urgent state duties that require his immediate attention, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) announced on Saturday.
The change was communicated in an official letter from the Office of the NRM Secretary General, dated October 4, 2025. Signed by Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, the letter was addressed to district and city chairpersons in Kole, Lira, and Lira City.
Titled “Adjustment of the Presidential Campaign Dates in Kole, Lira/Lira City,” the letter reads:
“This is to notify you that the date for the Presidential Campaign Rallies that had been scheduled to take place on Monday, October 6th, 2025, in Kole and Lira/Lira City has been adjusted. This is due to H.E the President’s need to attend to critical state duties on the set day. A new date shall be communicated to you soon.”
Party officials were also instructed to inform the public in their respective districts.
President Museveni, who serves as NRM National Chairman, has been actively campaigning across Lango as part of his preparations for the 2026 general elections. This suspension marks the first significant interruption to his campaign schedule, sparking attention and speculation across the region.
Local leaders in Kole and Lira, who had mobilized communities for large turnouts, expressed a mix of disappointment and understanding.
“The President’s duties to the nation come first. We are confident he will return to Lango at the earliest possible date,” said one local NRM official.
The Lango sub-region is a historically important political battleground, with opposition parties enjoying strong support, particularly in urban centers like Lira City. Analysts note that Museveni’s rallies were a key strategy for consolidating grassroots support ahead of next year’s elections.
The postponement highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing national governance with the demands of an active campaign trail, as the country edges closer to the 2026 polls. All eyes are now on State House and the NRM Secretariat for an announcement of the rescheduled campaign dates.
