President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Mr. Lino Anguzu as Uganda’s new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), succeeding Hon. Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo, who was recently elevated to the position of Principal Judge.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Senior Presidential Press Secretary, Mr. Sandor Walusimbi, who said the President had forwarded Mr. Anguzu’s name to Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting and approval.
Mr. Anguzu currently serves as Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions and Head of the International Crimes Department at the Office of the DPP, where he has played a key role in prosecuting complex cases involving terrorism, treason, and other transnational crimes.
A career prosecutor with decades of experience, Mr. Anguzu is credited with strengthening Uganda’s capacity to handle international crimes and ensuring that the country fulfills its obligations under global justice frameworks. His leadership in the International Crimes Department has seen Uganda secure convictions in several sensitive cases linked to regional security and insurgent activity.
In a statement, the Office of the DPP congratulated him on the appointment, describing it as a “well-deserved recognition of his professionalism and dedication to justice.” The institution noted that his nomination comes at a time when the ODPP is implementing key reforms to modernize case management, enhance accountability, and expand its regional presence.
Justice Abodo, who took over the DPP’s office in 2020, is widely praised for improving efficiency, promoting inter-agency cooperation, and restoring public confidence in the prosecution service. Her elevation to Principal Judge marks a continuation of the judicial reform agenda aimed at delivering faster and fairer justice.
If approved by Parliament, Mr. Anguzu will take charge of more than 2,000 prosecutors across the country and will oversee the prosecution of serious offenses including terrorism, corruption, gender-based violence, and economic crimes.
