Two Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) soldiers assigned to the security detail of the Minister of State for Defence and Veterans Affairs, Hon. Huda Olero, have died following a devastating head-on collision along the Kampala–Gulu highway on Sunday evening.
The accident occurred at around 7:00 pm in Kalule, Bombo, when the soldiers’ security pickup collided with a lorry reportedly transporting cattle. One soldier died instantly at the scene, while the second succumbed to injuries shortly after being rushed to Bombo Military Hospital.
The incident was confirmed by Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, who witnessed the crash firsthand. In a late-night statement, Mao dismissed early social media reports that had incorrectly suggested his own convoy had been involved.
“None of my vehicles was involved, but we witnessed the accident and stopped to help the victims,” Mao clarified. He added that his team, together with other motorists and residents, assisted in the emergency response and helped transport the injured to the hospital.
Authorities identified the lorry involved by its registration number UAN 394 Z. The cause of the collision has not yet been officially established, though investigations are underway.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Minister Mao said he immediately reached out to Defence Minister Oboth Oboth and Minister Olero to inform them of the situation. Minister Oboth reportedly directed medical teams at Bombo Military Hospital to respond swiftly.
The deaths of the two soldiers have cast a sombre mood over the UPDF fraternity, with further details expected as investigations continue.
