As Uganda steadily approaches the 2026 general elections, political focus in western Uganda is increasingly turning toward figures who are not only mobilising support but also reshaping party structures from the ground up. In Mbarara District, one such figure is Prosper Tuhaise Kururagire, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chairman whose influence continues to expand both politically and socially.

Kururagire’s political journey is deeply rooted in family history. His father was among the early supporters of the NRM in the 1990s, a contribution that did not go unnoticed at the national level. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the NRM National Chairman, once publicly acknowledged and praised his father’s unwavering support during the formative years of the Movement. He is widely credited for using his own resources to construct a permanent NRM office in Mbarara, an uncommon move that has strengthened party coordination, discipline, and visibility ahead of the 2026 elections. Party insiders say the office has become a hub for mobilisation, reconciliation, and youth engagement.

Beyond politics, Kururagire is a celebrated businessman, employing hundreds of Ugandans and Africans across various enterprises. This economic footprint has bolstered his credibility, particularly as economic issues dominate voter concerns ahead of 2026. Supporters argue that his understanding of wealth creation gives him a practical advantage in mobilising communities around NRM’s economic agenda.

Politically, Kururagire is praised as a unifying force. At a time when internal party divisions have weakened opposition groups, NRM structures in Mbarara have remained largely cohesive. Observers attribute this to his calm leadership style and emphasis on dialogue rather than confrontation.

As 2026 draws closer, analysts view Prosper Tuhaise Kururagire as a key stabilising figure whose influence may significantly shape NRM’s performance in Mbarara District.
