Four senior officials from Mityana District have been arrested over allegations of abuse of office and nepotism in a move authorities say is aimed at restoring integrity in public service recruitment.
The arrests were carried out by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force following preliminary investigations into alleged irregular recruitment practices within the district.
Those apprehended include Anna Miriam Nassali, the Vice Chairperson LCV of Mityana District; Dr. Lwassampijja Fred, Chairperson of the District Service Commission; Mukiibi Hussein, Secretary to the Commission; and Ssekibuule Andrew, a sitting member of the Commission.
According to investigators, the officials are suspected to have conspired to influence the recruitment process by favoring close relatives, including children and spouses, for various district positions. The alleged actions are said to have undermined merit-based recruitment and fair competition for public service jobs.
Some of the positions reportedly affected include Municipal Labour Officer, Education Assistants, Accountant for Mityana Municipality, as well as several Head Teacher and classroom teacher posts in schools across the district.
Authorities indicate that the appointments were made without adhering to established employment and appointment guidelines. Investigations further suggest that there was no disclosure of conflict of interest to the Commission, a requirement under the Leadership Code Act and the Uganda Public Service Standing Orders.
Officials involved in the probe say the ongoing investigations are intended to reinforce transparency, accountability, and professionalism in district recruitment processes. They emphasize that public offices must operate within the law to ensure that qualified candidates are given equal and fair opportunities to serve.
The suspects are expected to face further legal processes as investigations continue.
