At least 65 drivers have been arrested in a drink-driving enforcement operation conducted across key areas in Kampala as authorities intensify efforts to improve road safety during the Easter season.

The operation, carried out in the divisions of Jinja Road, Katwe and Wandegeya, targeted motorists suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. Police confirmed that all suspects are currently in custody, where they are undergoing statement recording and fingerprinting ahead of their court appearances.

Officials said the crackdown is part of a wider campaign to reduce road accidents during Easter, a period typically marked by increased travel and heightened risk on the roads.

Authorities warned that alcohol consumption significantly impairs judgment and reaction time, increasing the likelihood of fatal crashes. Motorists have been urged to avoid drink-driving, noting that such behavior endangers not only their own lives but also those of other road users.

The enforcement operation comes alongside a broader Easter road safety campaign aimed at promoting responsible behavior among both drivers and passengers.

Road users have been advised to avoid speeding and reckless overtaking, refrain from using mobile phones while driving, and ensure that seatbelts and helmets are worn at all times. Drivers have also been reminded to slow down in high-risk areas such as schools, markets and pedestrian crossings, and to strictly observe traffic signs and signals.

Passengers have been encouraged to speak out against reckless driving, with officials emphasizing that public vigilance can help prevent accidents.

Police further noted that enforcement efforts will continue throughout the holiday period, with a focus on drink-driving, speeding, unlicensed drivers and vehicle roadworthiness.

Motorists have also been urged to plan their journeys in advance, get adequate rest before driving and ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition.

Authorities reiterated that many road crashes are preventable and called on the public to prioritize safety during the celebrations.

“This Easter, let us make it joyful and not tragic,” officials said, urging all road users to act responsibly and help save lives.
