The Teso sub-region is reeling from shock following the tragic death of Simon Ichumar Omeke, the Katakwi District Health Officer, who was killed in a road crash on the night of Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

The fatal accident occurred at around 10:00 p.m. in Ogoloi Village along the Soroti–Katakwi road as Dr Ichumar was driving back to his home in Soroti City after a day’s work at Katakwi District Local Government. He was travelling with two passengers a woman identified only as Charity, seated in the front, and an elderly man believed to be his tractor driver, seated in the rear.

According to preliminary findings, the crash is suspected to have been caused by mechanical failure. Katakwi LC5 Chairperson Geoffrey Omolo, who visited the scene, said the vehicle appeared to veer off the road before crashing into a bridge. He noted that the steering system is believed to have failed, with indications that the steering wheel may have detached, causing the driver to lose control. The impact left the front of the vehicle, registration number UG 6670M, severely damaged.

Dr Ichumar was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was later taken to Bethesda Hospital mortuary. The two passengers sustained serious injuries, including deep cuts, and were rushed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. Local leaders described the incident as highly unusual, with LC1 Chairperson Richard Okello noting that no fatal accident had been recorded at the spot in many years.

Widely regarded as a dedicated public health specialist, Dr Ichumar played a key role in strengthening healthcare services in Katakwi District and across the Teso sub-region. He was particularly known for championing maternal health, promoting male involvement in antenatal care, and leading disease prevention initiatives, leaving behind a significant gap in the district’s health leadership.

His death comes just days after another tragic road accident claimed the life of Peter Banura Araali along the Hoima–Fort Portal road, raising fresh concerns about road safety in Uganda. Authorities are yet to release a full official report on the Katakwi crash, but the back-to-back fatalities involving public officials have intensified calls for stricter enforcement of road safety measures and vehicle inspections.

As investigations continue, colleagues, leaders, and residents across the region are mourning Dr Ichumar as a committed servant whose work had a lasting impact on countless lives.
