At least ten people have lost their lives in two tragic motorcycle crashes recorded over the past week, highlighting growing concerns over road safety and reckless riding across the country.
According to traffic spokesperson, SP Kananura Michael, the fatal incidents occurred in Manafwa and Buyende districts, with each motorcycle reportedly carrying five passengers. All ten victims died instantly at the scenes of the crashes, underscoring the dangers of overloading and unsafe riding practices.
Preliminary findings indicate that many of the road crashes registered during the week were caused by careless overtaking and speeding, which accounted for 51 percent of all reported incidents.
In response, authorities have intensified enforcement operations aimed at curbing indiscipline on the roads. Over the past week, a total of 878 traffic offenders were apprehended during targeted operations.
Among the violations recorded were 325 cases of driving dangerously, 41 instances of disobeying traffic directions, and 139 riders found operating motorcycles without helmets. Authorities also cited 92 cases of dangerous loading, 118 cases of improper pillion riding, and 53 drivers operating without valid licenses.
Other offences included 83 cases of illegal vehicle modifications, 11 cases of drink driving, 10 abandoned or broken-down vehicles obstructing traffic, and six violations of route charts.
Kananura say the ongoing operations are part of broader efforts to restore order and safety on the roads, particularly in light of the rising number of fatal accidents.
“We urge all road users to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life,” says Kananura.
The crackdown is expected to continue in the coming weeks as enforcement agencies seek to reduce road carnage and promote responsible road use.
