Police have arrested a private security guard in connection with the theft of cash and gold valued at hundreds of millions of shillings in Kampala.

According to police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the suspect, Akena Justine, was apprehended on April 15, 2026, following days of investigation into the incident that occurred earlier this month.

Akena, who was attached to Magnum Security Company, is accused of stealing a bag containing UGX 29 million and 900 grams of gold worth approximately UGX 500 million from a motor vehicle belonging to one Katuramu Maggie.

At the time of the alleged theft on April 10, Akena had been deployed to guard the premises of Goldex Uganda Limited, located along Mawanda Road in Kampala.

Police say that shortly after the incident, the suspect locked up the premises and went into hiding, prompting a manhunt.

He was later tracked down and arrested at around 10:30 p.m. in Gaspa Village, Bweyale Town Council. During interrogation, Akena reportedly admitted to committing the offence.

Preliminary investigations further revealed that the suspect had used part of the stolen money to start a retail shop, from where he was eventually arrested.

Akena is currently being held at Mawanda Road Police Station as investigations continue. Authorities say he will be charged in court once inquiries are complete.
