Police in Kiboga District have disrupted a planned child marriage and arrested eight individuals in an operation aimed at protecting a 16-year-old girl from being illegally married off.
The intelligence-led operation was conducted on April 16 in Kagoga Village, Kyomya Sub-county, after authorities received information about preparations for the marriage involving the minor, a Senior Three student at Bukomero Secondary School.
According to Wamala Region Police spokesperson Lameka Kigozi, officers found suspects already organising the ceremony despite the girl being below the legally permitted marriage age.
Among those arrested are the girl’s parents, relatives, the alleged groom, and his parents. Police identified the individuals as Kiyingi Yunus, Luwedde Robina, Namubiru Allen, Kawuki Mathias, Sande Walulya David, Tusibira Esther, and Kafeero Jacob. The minor has been identified as Nakibuuka Viola.
At the scene, police recovered several items believed to be intended for dowry, including food supplies and traditional attire such as gomesis and kanzus.
All suspects are currently detained at Kiboga Central Police Station as investigations continue. Authorities have already preferred charges of defilement and procuring defilement, pending approval from the Resident State Attorney.
Police have reiterated their warning to parents and guardians against engaging in child marriage, emphasizing that marrying off minors is a criminal offence under Ugandan law.
The operation is part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement to curb child abuse and protect the rights and welfare of children across the country.
