Police in Kawempe have arrested a daycare director following the tragic death of a four-year-old boy who sustained severe burns after falling into hot tea at a local early childhood centre.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala, the incident occurred on April 10 at Spotless Kindergarten and Daycare. The child, a pupil in the middle class section, reportedly fell into a saucepan of hot tea that had been brought into the classroom and left unattended. He suffered serious burns to the lower part of his body and was rushed for medical treatment.
Despite efforts by medical staff at Kiruddu National Referral Hospital, the boy succumbed to his injuries on April 15.
Police have since arrested the school director, identified as Elizabeth Aluku, as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident intensify. Preliminary findings indicate that no teacher was present in the classroom at the time, raising serious concerns about supervision and safety protocols at the facility.
Authorities say the case is being treated as one of rashness and negligence, with investigators seeking to establish how the child accessed the hot liquid in the absence of adult supervision.
Kawala has urged schools, particularly early childhood learning centres, to prioritize the safety of children at all times. She questioned the decision to place hot food or liquids within reach of young learners without proper monitoring.
Police have also announced plans to roll out inspections of school kitchen areas through fire and rescue teams, in a broader effort to enforce safety standards and prevent similar incidents in the future.
