The Kampala Metropolitan Police have intensified efforts to combat crime across the city and surrounding areas, carrying out a series of coordinated operations that have led to the arrest of more than 100 suspects.
According to KMP deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the operations targeted known criminal hideouts, black spots, and individuals suspected of engaging in illegal activities. The crackdown spanned multiple policing divisions, including Kira Road, Ntinda, Nateete, Entebbe, and Kasangati.
In the Kira Road policing area, particularly Mulimira and Kyebando, 31 suspects were arrested during an operation led by the Divisional Police Commander. The suspects are currently being held at Kira Road Police Division, where they await screening and fingerprinting.
Meanwhile, in Ntinda’s Kigowa area, a police patrol team intercepted a group of suspected criminals. The suspects fled upon sighting officers, abandoning a cache of dangerous weapons and tools commonly used in housebreaking. These included pangas, hammers, iron bars, and jerrycans containing suspected fuel. Two individuals were later apprehended while hiding in a residential garage. Preliminary investigations suggest the group may have been planning arson attacks linked to an ongoing land dispute.
In a separate operation in Nateete’s Kanaala Zone, police arrested a suspect found in possession of four motorcycles believed to be stolen, along with multiple number plates. Authorities are currently verifying ownership with relevant agencies.
Operations in Entebbe, specifically in Bunono and Guda, resulted in the arrest of 31 suspects accused of offenses ranging from theft and burglary to vandalism. These individuals have since been formally charged and are awaiting court proceedings.
Kasangati Division also saw a significant crackdown, with more than 47 suspects arrested in Wampewo Ward, Gayaza, and Kijabijjo. The suspects were picked up from betting centers and other known criminal hideouts.
Additionally, police arrested two individuals in Kijabijjo for allegedly operating an illegal garage used to dismantle suspected stolen motorcycles. Officers recovered several motorcycle parts, number plates, and vandalized components from the site.
Police have raised concerns about the increasing use of betting centers, unfinished buildings, and makeshift structures as safe havens for criminal elements. Authorities say operations will continue to target such locations as part of broader efforts to restore public safety.
All suspects remain in custody pending further screening and possible court action. Police have described the operations as successful and reaffirmed their commitment to eliminating crime within the Kampala metropolitan area.
