Police in Kisoro District have arrested three police officers and two civilians in connection with the alleged murder and secret burial of a Congolese national who reportedly died while in custody at Nyabwishenya Police Station.

The deceased, identified only as Uwimana, a 30-year-old Congolese national, is alleged to have been assaulted by a group of people at a drinking joint in Nyabwishenya on the night of May 6, 2026 at around 9:00pm after reportedly threatening some individuals at the premises.

According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, Elly Maate, preliminary investigations indicate that the victim was beaten by a group that included Nsabimana John Bosco and Hakuzimana Mpunuseni, the latter already under arrest, while several other suspects remain on the run.

Police said Uwimana was later handed over to officers at Nyabwishenya Police Station where he was reportedly charged with threatening violence and detained overnight.

However, tragedy unfolded the following morning when Uwimana was allegedly found dead inside the police cells on May 7, 2026 at around 8:00am.

In a development now at the centre of investigations, police allege that instead of officially reporting the death to senior authorities and following the required legal procedures, some officers attached to the station connived with suspects to secretly dispose of the body.

The body was allegedly buried during the night on land belonging to Bufumbira North County Member of Parliament, John Nizeyimana Kamara.

Police further revealed that relatives of the deceased who later went to Nyabwishenya Police Station seeking information about Uwimana were allegedly misled and informed that he had already been released from custody.

The matter reportedly escalated on May 8, 2026 after a group of Congolese nationals crossed into Uganda demanding answers regarding the whereabouts of their colleague.

The group allegedly attacked some of the suspects linked to the incident, prompting police intervention to contain the tense situation.

According to ASP Maate, officers at Nyabwishenya Police Station allegedly failed to brief the District Police Commander (DPC) about the developments despite the growing tension and security concerns surrounding the disappearance of the Congolese national.

Intelligence reports later emerged suggesting that the Congolese group was planning to attack Nyabwishenya Police Station over the suspected killing and disappearance of Uwimana.

This prompted the DPC to immediately dispatch an investigative team, leading to the arrest of three police officers attached to the station for questioning.

The arrested officers were identified as Corporal Musabimana Wickliffe, Police Constable Apeti Kizito, and Police Constable Yebuze Moris.

A team from Kisoro Central Police Station has since visited the scene and identified the suspected burial site pending exhumation of the body and a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

ASP Maate said investigations into the matter are ongoing as police continue hunting for additional suspects linked to the alleged assault, death, and concealment of evidence.
