The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has officially withdrawn from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament, ending weeks of speculation surrounding her political future and the leadership of Uganda’s next Parliament.

In a strongly worded public statement released on Monday, Among said her decision followed “wide consultations and deep introspection,” emphasizing that her move was aimed at maintaining unity and harmony within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

“I wish to categorically and unequivocally state that I will not be offering myself for the Speakership race of the 12th Parliament,” Among declared.

The outgoing Speaker expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the NRM party leadership, and members of the 11th Parliament for entrusting her with the opportunity to serve both as Deputy Speaker and later Speaker of Parliament over the last five years.

She also paid tribute to her family, friends, and political allies for standing by her throughout her tenure, which has seen her emerge as one of the most influential female political figures in the country.

Among pledged full support to whoever will eventually be endorsed by President Museveni and the NRM party for the powerful parliamentary position.

“I pledge my total support to the candidates who will be endorsed by the President and the Party, and implore all colleague MPs of the 12th Parliament to do the same,” she stated.

Her announcement is expected to significantly shape the internal dynamics of the ruling party ahead of the formation of the next Parliament, while also calming tensions that had started building around the highly contested Speakership race.

In the same statement, Among addressed ongoing investigations into allegations that have recently surrounded her leadership, saying she remains committed to cooperating with state institutions handling the matters.

“In the meantime, I pledge to continue cooperating with all ongoing investigations as initiated by the relevant organs of the state to get to the root of all the allegations raised,” she noted.

Despite stepping aside from the Speakership contest, Among signaled that she remains available for future national service should she be called upon by the President and the ruling party.

“I shall remain available to the service of my country as the party and the President may assign me,” she added.

Her decision now leaves the race for the Speakership of the 12th Parliament wide open, with political observers closely watching who the NRM leadership will front for one of the country’s most powerful offices.
