Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, has announced the launch of a sweeping anti-corruption campaign code-named Operation Maliza Ufisadi (Operation End Corruption), signaling what could become one of the most aggressive crackdowns on graft in the country’s recent history.
In a series of strongly worded posts on X, Gen. Muhoozi said the operation has already led to the recovery of significant amounts of money and property allegedly stolen from the public.
“Operation Maliza Ufisadi has just begun. Already we have retrieved quite a lot of the people’s money and property,” he wrote. “Everything will be returned to the Treasury. I advise all government officials to co-operate fully with the security services in order to avoid arrest.”
The military chief said a partial report detailing the assets and funds recovered would be released soon.
Gen. Muhoozi also disclosed that President Museveni had authorized the operation to arrest virtually any individual in Uganda, with the only exceptions being the President himself and First Lady Janet Museveni.
“The President allowed this operation to arrest anybody in Uganda except the President and First Lady. Everybody else in this country can be arrested,” he stated.
In another post, Gen. Muhoozi addressed concerns about individuals allegedly using connections to Uganda’s First Family to evade scrutiny or influence investigations.
“As for our rather large extended First Family, I will give you a hotline number for anybody claiming to be part of us. Please call to verify any individual. If they are liars, they should be arrested,” he wrote.
The announcement comes amid heightened public attention over ongoing corruption investigations involving senior government officials, including a high-profile probe targeting outgoing Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.
Political analysts say the timing of the operation suggests a significant intensification of the government’s anti-graft efforts, with security agencies taking a more prominent role in pursuing officials suspected of embezzlement and abuse of office.
If implemented as announced, Operation Maliza Ufisadi could mark a major turning point in Uganda’s fight against corruption, an issue that has long undermined public confidence, weakened institutions, and diverted resources meant for essential services.
Gen. Muhoozi’s remarks have already generated widespread debate across the country, with many Ugandans expressing cautious optimism that the campaign could recover stolen public funds and hold powerful individuals accountable.
With promises of imminent arrests and asset recoveries, all eyes are now on the security services and the anticipated partial report that may reveal the first major targets and outcomes of Operation Maliza Ufisadi.
