Teaching and learning activities at Kobedi AME Zion Primary and Junior High School in the Sunyani West Municipality of Ghana’s Bono Region have come to a standstill after teachers reportedly abandoned classes indefinitely following the deaths of two colleagues under mysterious circumstances.
The affected teachers include the school’s head teacher, Madam Gladys Dorlo Batinge, whose death, together with that of another staff member, has triggered fear and anxiety among teachers and residents in the Kobedi community near Chiraa.
According to reports by Crime Check News, the boycott by teachers began on Monday, May 18, 2026, leaving classrooms deserted and pupils without lessons.
A visit to the school reportedly found the compound empty during school hours, with both teachers and students absent as uncertainty and tension continue to grow within the community.
The incident has since sparked widespread speculation among residents, with some linking the deaths to alleged spiritual attacks and rumours of a curse reportedly invoked by a student after accusations of extortion were made against school authorities.
Several community members, who spoke anonymously, claimed local beliefs surrounding a deity associated with the alleged curse have heightened fear among teachers, influencing their decision to stay away from the school until the matter is resolved.
“We are reliably informed that teachers have resolved to boycott classes and register their displeasure about the present happenings in the school,” one resident told Crime Check News.
A teacher at the school also reportedly confirmed that staff members had collectively agreed not to resume classes unless the alleged curse is revoked.
The development has severely disrupted academic activities in the area, with many schoolchildren reportedly left roaming around the community during school hours.
Parents and local leaders are now expressing concern over the prolonged closure of the school and the impact it could have on pupils preparing for examinations.
Despite growing public concern, education authorities and local government officials are yet to issue an official statement regarding the deaths, the teachers’ boycott, or the allegations surrounding the reported curse.
The situation continues to attract widespread attention across the Bono Region as residents await clarity from authorities over the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the future of the school.
