Meet Museveni’s Father, Muhoozi’s Grand Father; A Celebrated Hardworking, Disciplined & Humble Patriarch Of ‘All Times’

By Our Reporter

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, is widely recognized for his role in the military and politics. However, little is known about his grandfather, Amos Kaguta, whose principles and values greatly influenced the Museveni family.

Amos Kaguta was born in the early 1900s in Uganda’s Ankole region and belonged to the Bahima tribe, a subgroup of the Ankole people. He was highly regarded for his wisdom, diligence, and discipline, earning admiration from his community for his strong character and leadership.

Kaguta’s teachings had a profound impact on his family. President Museveni has often credited his father for instilling in him the values of hard work, leadership, and discipline—qualities that shaped his presidency. These same values also influenced his grandson, General Muhoozi, who followed a military career.

Despite his son’s rise to power, Kaguta chose a simple and humble life. He shunned luxury, avoided public attention, and preferred to stay in his rural home, focusing on farming and family. Unlike many in his position, he never sought bodyguards, extravagant homes, or international travel.

In his later years, even when he fell ill, Kaguta refused to be flown abroad for treatment, opting instead for local clinics. He only traveled to Kampala for medical care when his condition worsened. He passed away at Kampala International Hospital on February 22, 2013, at the age of 97.

Kaguta shared a close bond with his son, General Salim Saleh, who was deeply affected by his passing. His relationship with his wife, Esteri Kokundeka, also played a significant role in shaping their family. While Kokundeka fully embraced Christianity, Kaguta maintained some traditional beliefs, though he respected his wife’s religious influence.

His funeral was attended by cultural leaders, government officials, and community members who came to pay their respects. Amos Kaguta is remembered as a humble man who upheld hard work and discipline. His legacy lives on through his children and grandchildren, who continue to embody the values he instilled in them.
