The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has announced a significant conservation milestone following the sighting of a newborn lion cub in the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park.

According to UWA, the cub was recently observed in good health while feeding alongside its pride on a fresh kill, an encouraging sign for the survival and growth of the region’s lion population.

Conservation officials described the sighting as a positive development for ongoing wildlife protection efforts, highlighting the importance of sustained conservation measures in safeguarding Uganda’s iconic big cats.

“This is a wonderful sight and a positive indicator for the future of lion conservation in the Ishasha sector,” UWA said in a statement. “We remain optimistic about the cub’s growth and survival in the wild.”

The birth comes as welcome news for conservationists, as lion populations across Africa continue to face threats such as habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching. The presence of a healthy cub signals a thriving ecosystem and successful protection efforts within the park.

Located in the southern section of Queen Elizabeth National Park, Ishasha is internationally renowned for its rare tree-climbing lions, one of Uganda’s most celebrated wildlife attractions. The area draws thousands of tourists each year, contributing significantly to conservation awareness and tourism revenue.

UWA says monitoring of the pride will continue as part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of the cub and its habitat. The latest sighting adds to the growing list of conservation success stories emerging from one of Uganda’s most treasured protected areas.
