Finally: UNRA Clears Buses To Use Katonga Road

By Frank Kamuntu

Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has announced the reopening of the Katonga Bridge to buses and other heavy vehicles as the repairing process continues.

This has been announced in a letter inked by the Authority’s Executive Director Ms Allen Kagina instructing Prome Consultants Ltd, the company that has been monitoring the bridge.

Kagina in her letter says the monitoring of the old existing bridge carried out on 1st September 2023, indicated deflections within the allowable limits under 30-tonne loading but it can handle buses.

“There should be constant traffic control measures, including installation of signages at strategic locations on the Masaka and Kampala sides clearly displaying the type of vehicles that can use the bridge and the acceptable load limits and deploying flagmen to guide traffic across the bridge,” she inked.

Kagina says currently, works on phase II of the restoration works are ongoing and on completion will enable full restoration of traffic before permanent works can commence.
