Nairobi: Anxiety is mounting over the whereabouts of former Mabatini Ward MCA aspirant Joel Kariuki Mwai after he was allegedly abducted by unidentified men in Nairobi’s Mathare area on Thursday afternoon.

According to human rights organisation VOCAL Africa, Mwai, 45, was returning home from his business in Mathare Number 10 at around 1:30 p.m. when he was intercepted by several men who claimed to be police officers.

Witnesses said the individuals, dressed in civilian clothing, approached Mwai before forcing him into a double-cab pickup truck and driving away. Residents who attempted to intervene were reportedly threatened after the men brandished firearms, forcing them to back off.

As of Friday afternoon, Mwai’s whereabouts remained unknown, sparking concern among family members, friends, political allies and human rights advocates.

Mwai is a familiar figure in local politics, having contested the Mabatini Ward Member of County Assembly seat during the 2022 General Election on a Jubilee Party ticket.

The reported disappearance has drawn widespread attention from rights groups and public figures, who are demanding urgent clarification from security agencies.

VOCAL Africa Chief Executive Officer Hussein Khalid raised the alarm over the incident, calling for immediate efforts to establish Mwai’s location and ensure his safety.

Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga also shared details of the case, amplifying calls for transparency and accountability from authorities.

Human rights defenders have urged security agencies to publicly state whether Mwai is being held by any government department or law enforcement agency. By the time of publication, no official statement had been issued regarding the incident.

The case has once again reignited debate over allegations of enforced disappearances and abductions in Kenya, with civil society organisations calling for thorough investigations and greater protection of citizens’ rights.

As concern continues to grow, relatives and supporters remain hopeful that Mwai will be found safe and that authorities will provide answers regarding the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
