Big Win: Argentina Smash England To Reach World Cup Final | Here’s What You Missed!

Defending champions Argentina produced a stunning late comeback to defeat England 2-1 on Wednesday and book their place in a second consecutive FIFA World Cup final, where they will face Spain in a mouth-watering title decider.

The dramatic semi-final, played in Atlanta, saw England take the lead through Anthony Gordon before Argentina rallied in the closing stages, with Enzo Fernandez restoring parity and Lautaro Martinez heading home a stoppage-time winner from a pinpoint Lionel Messi cross.

The victory keeps alive Argentina’s dream of becoming the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup title.

England looked on course for a famous victory after Anthony Gordon broke the deadlock in the 55th minute. Morgan Rogers delivered an inviting cross into the box, and Gordon made no mistake, firing past the Argentine goalkeeper to hand the Three Lions the advantage.

However, Lionel Messi’s side refused to surrender.

The South Americans gradually took control of the contest, piling relentless pressure on England’s defence and forcing goalkeeper Jordan Pickford into a series of outstanding saves.

Argentina’s persistence finally paid off in the 85th minute when midfielder Enzo Fernandez unleashed a superb long-range strike that flew beyond Pickford to level the scores.

With extra time looming, the reigning world champions delivered the decisive blow deep into stoppage time. Messi, who once again proved the inspiration for his country, floated a perfectly weighted cross into the penalty area, where Lautaro Martinez rose highest to head home the winner in the 92nd minute.

England manager Thomas Tuchel introduced late defensive reinforcements in an attempt to preserve the draw, but Argentina’s attacking pressure and vast tournament experience ultimately proved too much for the Three Lions.

The victory sends Argentina into their second successive World Cup final and gives Messi another opportunity to add to his remarkable international legacy at the age of 39.

Argentina will now face Spain, who secured their place in the final after defeating France 2-0 in Tuesday’s semi-final.

The highly anticipated final will pit two of world football’s most accomplished sides against each other, with Argentina chasing history as they seek to become the first team in more than six decades to retain the World Cup crown, while Spain will be aiming to reclaim the sport’s biggest prize.
