Nalongo Maggie Kaweesi, the widow of late Ugandan musician Emmanuel Mayanja, popularly known as AK47, has died after developing health complications.

Kaweesi passed away on Monday, July 20, at Mengo Hospital, where she had reportedly been admitted for three days following complications that developed shortly after her return to Uganda.

The news of her death was confirmed by events promoter Vegas, a close friend of the Mayanja family, who said Kaweesi’s condition deteriorated after she was hospitalized.

“It is bad news. God has called her. She had just come back to the country,” Vegas said.

“She often came and went, but this time she developed some complications with her internal organs. She passed away moments ago at Mengo Hospital. We are at the hospital. She had spent three days here,” he added.

By the time of publication, Kaweesi’s family had not disclosed the exact cause of her illness or announced burial arrangements.

Kaweesi was a businesswoman and socialite who became widely known through her relationship with AK47, one of Uganda’s celebrated musicians. AK47 died in March 2015, leaving behind Kaweesi and their twins.

Following the singer’s death, Kaweesi largely stayed away from the limelight before making headlines again in July 2021 when she held a traditional introduction ceremony with fellow musician Rabadaba in Entebbe.

The couple later relocated to the United Kingdom but eventually parted ways after their relationship was marred by public disagreements.

Kaweesi had also spent time living abroad with her twins before bringing them back to Uganda for a reunion with the Mayanja family, a move that attracted widespread public attention.

News of her passing has triggered an outpouring of condolences from friends, fans and members of Uganda’s entertainment fraternity, many remembering her resilience following AK47’s death and her dedication to raising their children.

More details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be communicated by the family.
