A police sniffer dog has helped investigators recover a firearm and five rounds of ammunition reported missing from a Chinese road construction camp in Bunamwaya, Makindye-Ssabagabo, with five security guards now in custody.
The firearm was recovered after a police K9 named Sophia tracked a scent from the spot where a security guard said he had fallen asleep before discovering that his weapon was missing.
According to police, the incident occurred on August 18, 2026, at about 7:00am when Chandiga Charles, a security guard deployed by Capital Guard at the Chinese construction camp, returned to the site without his firearm.
Chandiga reportedly told his operations officer that he had fallen asleep while on duty and, upon waking up, realised that the firearm was missing.
The matter was reported to Kikumbi Police Station, prompting investigators to enlist the Police K9 Unit to help trace the weapon.
Police said Sophia was taken to the exact spot where Chandiga had reportedly slept and immediately picked up a scent.
The dog tracked the scent for approximately 20 metres before approaching one of the tractors parked at the construction site.
It reportedly circled around the tractor before sitting down, an indication to its handlers that the scent had led them to the vehicle.
Although the tractor was locked, Chinese workers at the site opened it, leading to the discovery of the missing firearm and five rounds of ammunition.
The recovery raised further questions for investigators, prompting the K9 team to continue tracing the scent.
Police said Sophia was reintroduced into the tractor and continued tracking the scent for about 100 metres towards the accommodation area used by the security personnel.
The dog reportedly moved through several rooms occupied by the guards before entering a room belonging to Chandiga, the same guard who had reported the firearm missing.
Chandiga and four other night guards from the same security company were subsequently arrested and taken to police for questioning.
Investigators are now working to establish how the firearm ended up inside the tractor and whether the suspects were involved in its disappearance.
The firearm and ammunition remain in police custody as investigations continue.
Police are expected to record statements from the suspects and other workers at the construction site as they piece together the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and recovery of the weapon.
The suspects have not been convicted of any offence and remain subject to the ongoing police investigation.
