A man accused of fraudulently obtaining Shs300 million in a land deal has finally been convicted and sentenced by the Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court, bringing to a close a case that arose from a disputed land transaction in Gomba.
The court convicted Mwesigye Amos after finding him liable in connection with allegations that he obtained Shs300 million from Steven Kagyenyi through false pretences. The court also ordered Mwesigye to pay Shs300 million in compensation to Kagyenyi, in addition to the fine imposed as part of his sentence.
Mwesigye was arrested and charged in 2023 following investigations and joint action by the Anti-Graft Unit, the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). The case stemmed from allegations that in 2020, Mwesigye, together with some family members of the late Nasanairi Kinalwa, falsely claimed ownership of about 120 acres of titled land and proceeded to transact on property they allegedly did not legally own.
According to the case, Mwesigye subsequently sold portions of the disputed land to other individuals, allegedly in an attempt to undermine the interests of the registered owner.
The conviction and compensation order mark a significant development in efforts to protect landowners from fraudulent transactions and hold individuals accountable for obtaining money through false representations.
The Anti-Graft Unit said the case demonstrates the importance of collaboration among investigative and prosecutorial agencies in pursuing alleged fraud and corruption-related offences, while the compensation order provides a legal remedy to the complainant who lost the money in the disputed transaction.
